~ seeing spots ~

When Tracie at 'CroCreations' saw my crochet hooks, she was inspired to create some of her own.  I have only created swirly handles, but when I saw Tracie's polka dot hooks, I was inspired to try to create one.

I have to tell you that doing polka dots is kind of tricky.  Mine did not stay perfectly round.  But that's ok - I like it anyway.  In fact, I think this is my new 'favorite' hook.  It's a Susan Bates size 'J'.

And speaking of Susan Bates - I bought 2 new hooks (plus some Red Heart Soft yarn) from Herrschners and they are different.  The head of the hook is not pointy like it used to be - they are rounded - and the actual hook part is smaller.  I hope I won't have trouble trying to hook the yarn when I'm crocheting.

**eta - I have been using this hook for a while now and I have had absolutely no problems crocheting with it.  (I haven't tried a tight sc pattern (like amigurumi) - there might be a problem there since there is no point to help push thru the stitch.)

  1. Hi Deb! I love your polka dots, aren't they fun to make. Last night I covered a size 3 hook and added a T with dots around it! I will add a pic of it soon. :-)

  2. Debi: I love the hook! Susan Bates is the best! I buy hooks if I go to garage sales I just pick them up because they are usually cheap and I put them in a container and they look pretty in my crochet room. I am amazed at the same size say G being so very different by different manufacturers...And wooden hooks forget it they are way off..

  3. Wow, that's a real difference in the hooks! Surprising me that they would make such a change. I have some old Susan Bates hooks (at least 20 years old) and they are my absolute favorites. A couple of weeks ago I lost the case where I keep all my best hooks and I was beside myself until I tracked down where I left them!

  4. Love the polka dots Debi, looks like a fun hook to use. That is a big difference on the hooks. Wonder why they made the change? I like Boye, but I think it's just because it is what I got used to. I have two really pretty wooden hooks that I've only used a handful of times. I always end up reaching for one of my colorful aluminum hooks. Have a great day. :-)

  5. I'm always slightly amazed at how crochet hook sizing has changed over the years! My mom still has all of her crochet hooks from her 20's and her favorite K hook is ALMOST as big as today's N!!!!

  6. I found that hook sizes were changing when I bought a size 10 a couple of years ago..the shank was smaller and the hook kept making me split my thread and I usually never have split threads..so I buy them at garage and estate sales..along with thread, patterns I also hoard hooks.

  7. Fun polka dots!

Susan Bates is my favorite, too! That makes me a little nervous that they won't work as smoothly anymore. I'll be anxious to hear how you like the new ones.

  8. Love your polka dotted hook...good job! :) And wow, that sure is a big difference in how the hooks are made. Boye used to be my favorite, but I have evolved and use some Susan Bates now, too. :) The SB ones were given to me when my sister's mil passed away. She was an avid crocheter, and judging by the SB hooks I inherited, I'd say SB was her fave. :)

  10. I love the polka dot hook! It looks fab and those dots look nice and round to me. Great job!

I was amazed to see the hook differences. With only learning to crochet in June, I've only ever used/seen the newer rounded sized types, so it was interesting to see a comparision like this.

  13. I love the look of the hook handle you made, but the new hook style by Bates is horrible. Their original style is what made them distinct and made me loyal to them. Luckily I have a lot of hooks in the many sizes, but if I need a replacement then they are no longer guaranteed my business.

  16. Debi,
Do you mind if I borrow your hook comparison picture for a blog post I'm writing? I will give you full credit for the pic and point everyone to your blog. Just let me know if that's ok. Thanks.
